Can't vs Won't Thinking
Student Behaviour
Won’t Thinking
Can’t Thinking
Not being on task
He is lazy.
Does he understand what is being asked?
Jokes around and distracts class
She just wants attention.
Does she have the skills to do the task?
Not paying attention
He is unmotivated.
What sensory stressors are in this room right now?
Leaves room
She is defiant.
Do they need a movement break?
Doesn’t do homework
He doesn’t care about school.
What’s happening at home right now?
Won’t join in with friends
She prefers to be on her own.
She prefers to be with adults.
Does she know how to make and keep friends?
Can't vs Won't
If you believe….
Kids do well if they wanna...
Kids do well if they can...
Then you believe….
This student won’t do this
This student can’t do this
Then you will try to...
Motivate them to want to
Discover what the barrier is
by...
Rewards and/or punishment
Looking for lagging skills and teaching them for unmet needs and meeting them
If he/she wanted to do well all along...
You have made it worse
You have helped them move forward
If the child still isn’t doing well...
You need bigger awards and worse punishments
You dig deeper to find out what is in the way

Facebook Group
Hello all,
If you haven't got a chance to check it out yet here is the link to the Facebook group that Lindsay has set up for the class.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/EASD62/
Last year the students really appreciated having a place to connect, and support each other and ask each other questions using a platform separate from us as teachers.
Thanks for this Lindsay. :)

See you tomorrow night.

Hi all,
Hope you all had a great rest of your weekend.
Just a reminder of the home learning we are hoping you've had time to complete for tonight's class.
- Three things worth mentioning from the Rita Pierson: Every Kid Needs a Champion TED Talk.
- Someone who supported you in school or elsewhere when you were a child and 5 traits that person had.
See you tonight.
